Exercise and Environmental Physiology

Course Description

Discussion of how chemical energy is captured within cells and how potential chemical energy is converted to muscular work. Energetics, direct and indirect calorimetry, pathways of carbon flow in exercise, ventilation, circulation, skeletal muscle fiber types. Practical examples include: high altitude performance, exercise in the heat and cold, exercise and CHD and CMD, sex difference in performance, ergogenic aids, the sources of fatigue.

Prerequisites

BIOLOGY 1A, CHEM 3B, and INTEGBI 132 or MCELLBI 136, or permission of the instructor.
