Units and GPA

Minimum Total Units

All undergraduate students must complete a minimum of 120 semester units to graduate.

A maximum of 4 PE units and 16 Special Studies units (97, 98, 99, 197, 198, and 199) can be counted toward this requirement. Please note that these limitations are reflected in the Academic Progress Report (APR) but not in CalCentral under Academic Summary.

Senior Residence

As you pursue your degree at Berkeley, you’ll have various opportunities, including attending other campuses, transferring units, and participating in programs like the UC Education Abroad Program (UCEAP) or Berkeley Summer Abroad.

Given these options, faculty require that you spend at least your senior year in residence to fulfill graduation requirements. You are considered a senior upon reaching 90 units, including both Berkeley and transfer units. To meet the Senior Residence requirement, after completing 90 semester units, you must earn at least 24 additional units through UC Berkeley courses over a minimum of two terms, with each term consisting of at least 6 earned units.

1/3 Passed Grade Limit

You can count up to one-third of your total units as Passed Grade (P) units toward the 120-unit requirement for graduation. This limit is calculated as one-third of the units needed to reach 120, minus any transfer units and exam units. The remaining units (120 - Total Transfer/Exam Units) serve as the baseline for this calculation.

To estimate your personal limit, use the 1/3 Passed Grade Limit Calculator  available in CalCentral under My Academics in the "Degree Progress" card.

Minimum Overall GPA

All undergraduate students must earn an overall GPA of 2.00 for graduation. There may be additional GPA requirements for your major and minor.
